With poker I would recommend that you start playing against weaker players but then move up to tables where the skill levels are on par with yours or slightly better. There is so much to learn with poker and you are not going to learn much always playing weaker players. Acquire as many tips and tricks as you can to become a better player.
Having enough skills and a good plan is the key.

Based on what I understood when I was conducting my research to prepare on our game night during Fridays, it is best to understand the tendencies of your opponent. Understanding your opponents' behaviors, patterns, bluffs can be a good strategy to win the game.
play patiently with proper read on your opponent and bet wisely with a little luck and good hand.

The "Don't go broke in a limped pot" rule. This hits differently when you experienced it the first time. Never ever do this.
