One Armando Bacot, a basketball athlete argues that sports wagering is "terrible." According to Bacot, sports wagering culture is toxic because despite him playing a good game and feeling great about it, his DMs are flooded with negative and hateful messages telling him that he sucked (Source).

I feel really bad for athletes. There is no winning really. You play a good game and you think you did your best but no, the keyboard warriors are waiting to shred you to pieces.ย

Well if I bet on someone to play good and they do and they win why would I send negative message?ย

Unfortunately, there are many "sad cowards" around who seem to take pleasure in criticizing athletes on social media whether they have had a bet on them or not. These people would never say negative things to these athletes on a face-to-face basis because they would be too scared.

I am not sure that all of the negative comments come from gamblers who have had a bet on the athlete. There are some people that just love to be negative about people in the spotlight because they are jealous or for other reasons that I cannot explain. My advice to athletes is to ignore these comments and treat them with the disrespect they deserve but you cannot blame gambling for all of this.

@graham If I was an athlete and someone who's made a bet on me is fuming in the comments... let it be. I've still got my money. That's how it should be.

@dany Yes I agree. But the point I was making is that you cannot blame all of this negativity on gambling.

itโ€™s crazy how some people feel entitled to trash athletes just because they lost a bet. Athletes are out there giving it their all, but some folks only see dollar signs. Makes you wonder if sports betting is worth all the negativity. 😔ย

I don't think such a problem is limited to sports bettors unfortunately.

I think there's no problem with sports betting. But going out of the way to abuse the players just because you lost a bet is not only unethical but sadistic.ย

Betting on a game doesnโ€™t give anyone the right to trash athletes. These players are grinding it out on the field, not here to bankroll your bets. Sports betting is a choice, but respect isnโ€™t optional.

@abaes You got that right. People cant blame the athletes whether they win or lose. There should always be mutual respect + they betted the money on their own free will. You win or you lose.

I feel athletes should not necessarily check their social media im general especially just after a game even if they play well cause the toxicity especially for public figures on sm is crazy.

@facebook-anikeadaeze Exactly like in football, you see players posting racist stuff they get in their dms all because the game went against them.

@ishtar Social media can get really toxic generally so its no surprise really. And u would find most of the racists are basically indoctrinated with that hate which they then transfet to others. Sad situation all round, hopefully with time and better censorship it reduces.
