Historians believe that the Roulette was invented by a French Mathematician named Blaise Pascal. Although he wasn't really trying to invent a casino game but rather he wanted to invent a perpetual motion machine that is why he invented it 'accidentally'. For context, a perpetual motion machine is a machine that continues to operate without the use of external energy.

The 'zero' didn't also exist until the King Charles III of Monaco, requested Francois Blanc to add it to give the house a 'bigger' edge. You can read more about it in these articles: article1, article2.

I will be attaching an image below an old version of roulette, I am not really sure if it is the first iteration.

Thatโ€™s interesting. He invented it by chance. Perhaps explains why the fundamentals of roulettes are based on chance. Lol. Just saying. How about โ€œRussian Rouletteโ€ thoughย

Thank you for this interesting information. I am always interested in the history of casino games and I have heard this reference to Pascal before. Is it certain that he invented roulette or is it just an educated guess? The game may have been created many years before Pascal - it's one of those mysteries that is not likely to be solved.

Fascinating stuff! So Pascal accidentally invented roulette while trying to make a perpetual motion machine? Sounds like the ultimate โ€œoopsโ€ moment in casino history. If only my attempts at luck were so productive!

Imagine innovating a machine for science and now, it is being used as a form of entertainment and has became one of the most popular business of all time. This is just too iconic and funny at the same time.
